Bible Event

The Resurrection of Jesus

The resurrection of Jesus Christ stands at the centre of the Christian faith. After being crucified and buried, Jesus rose bodily from the dead on the third day. His resurrection fulfilled Scripture, confirmed the truth of His teaching, demonstrated the Father's acceptance of His sacrifice, and became the foundation of the apostles' preaching and the believer's hope.

Historical background

Jesus was crucified under the authority of Pontius Pilate and buried before the Sabbath. The Gospel accounts report that the tomb was found empty early on the first day of the week and that Jesus appeared alive to numerous followers over a period of time. The earliest Christian proclamation consistently placed the resurrection at the centre of the gospel message.

Archaeology

Historical context

First-century Jewish tombs around Jerusalem were commonly cut into limestone rock.

The Gospel accounts reflect Jewish burial customs, including linen wrappings and spices.

The exact location of Jesus' tomb remains debated, though the Church of the Holy Sepulchre preserves an ancient Jerusalem tradition.
